The island has a population of about 1, 500 people and it has basic infrastructures such as a good secondary school and medical services. Local business, building groups and the number of people working for the government increases daily. In recent years, there has also been an increase in the making of the fiber glass fishing boats.
The island’s terrain is marked with Hawittas or unexplained heaps, which are suspected to be the remains of Buddhist temples. An ancient mosque, which is well known for its craftsmanship is a main landmark.
